Inky caps belong to the genus Coprinus. There are many types of inky caps, including smaller species in the genera coprinellus and coprinopsis. Common names for inky caps include Lawyer's Wig and Shaggy Mane. This inky cap bauble is one of the type species for the genus, Coprinus comatus. All coprinoid mushrooms have a special capability and method of spore dispersal-- they autodigest themselves at maturity, becomming a inky black goo within hours. Bugs that land on the mushroom will track the ink around, thus dispersing the spores.
